Washington State Capitol Building Guide

Witness the Seat of Power: Explore the Washington State Capitol Guide

The Washington State Capitol Building in Olympia is a stunning architectural masterpiece and the center of state government. This impressive building, with its iconic dome, offers visitors a chance to learn about the history and workings of Washington's government. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the legislative process and the building's art and architecture. Construction of the current Capitol Building began in 1911 and was completed in 1928. It replaced the original wooden capitol building, which had become inadequate for the growing state government. The design, inspired by Neoclassical architecture, features a massive dome that is taller than the U.S. Capitol dome in Washington, D.C. The building houses the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, and other state officials, as well as the chambers of the State Senate and House of Representatives. Visitors can take free guided tours of the Capitol Building, exploring the legislative chambers, the Governor's Mansion (by reservation), and the State Reception Room. The grounds surrounding the Capitol are beautifully landscaped and offer stunning views of the Puget Sound. The Legislative Building also houses an impressive collection of art, including sculptures, paintings, and murals that depict the history and culture of Washington State. While the Capitol itself doesn't have a culinary tradition, the surrounding downtown Olympia area offers a diverse range of restaurants and cafes.
